Cannot reduce search view window

Hi. I am still using BP much, as i find it is the best of its kind for searching and copying which i do much of, by God's grace, but i would like to reduce the size of the search window more than it is allowed, in order to have the Bible view window side by side the search view, without having to shrink the Bible view even more than it is. I can only reduce the search view now to a little over half the size of my 19'' monitor.

Another improvement would be to enable the same "copy verses" function which the Bible view window offers, for copying a selected text in the search window, rather than just "copy selection with links" or without links.

As it is now, to get the full copy function you have to left click twice on a search result, which results in losing the search window. Perhaps at least the latter could stay up after a result is selected, if the window could be made smaller so side by side was better enabled.

Even more of an enhancement would be a combination "Go to verse" bar and Search bar, which would recognize search words in distinction from a bible reference, and show the results in a search window, like the address bar in some browsers doubles as a search bar.

Also, my custom copy string [header: " Body: $text " Footer: ($range)] places a space between the closing quotation mark and the text, as in

"¶And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; "(2 Samuel 12:7)

Is there any way to eliminate the space? And the ¶ while still showing them in the Bible view?

Another question is also particular to me. In the interest of speed with stiff fingers, i use AutoHotKey and scripted the CapsLock to key to function as Ctrl+C (CapsLock::^c ), so that it copies whatever is selected [I also have the ESc key as Paste (Esc::^v) and NumLock as Esc (NumLock::Esc)]. This works in most every other program, but for some reason when i try to copy using this in BPB, it brings up the comment box. Can i change this?

Finally, I look forward to seeing ver. 0.5, and pray it will enable copying as formatted, so that the supplied words in italics are retained.

Thank God for you heart to provide this precious tool, and thanks for your working to improve it. From the activity on this forum, BPB does not seem to well known, but God can change that.

Comments

Thanks again for your comments.

I'm surprised by your comments about resizing the search window, and can't think why that would be. I have a 15 inch monitor, and can resize the search window to about an eighth of it.

You can try a Beta version of 0.5 if you like. BPBible 0.5 Beta 3 does still have quirks, but I now use it as my principal Bible program (and will do the same with Beta 4 when it is released). It does support copy as formatted (with italics being copied).

I don't know about eliminating either the space or the ¶, but I don't think it can be done in the current version or in 0.5 beta.

Enabling copy verse from the search window would make sense. I suppose I've never thought about it because I would just about always go to the search results to see if there is anything interesting in the context of that verse.

Any time a program goes out of its way to do anything additional with the keyboard it increases the possibility it will break any unusual usages, and this would seem to have happened here. The "c" character, without any additional keys, is intended to allow commenting on the verse, and it does so. I never considered people re-mapping keys as you described. I'm not sure what it's best to do about this.

Reactivating search window

One more comment: when I use the Bible search window and it goes away because I go to a reference, I will then use Ctrl-F to bring it back again. This may be helpful to you. Also, if you are wanting to look at every match one by one in the Bible window then typing the "n" character in the Bible window will go to the next reference in the search results list.

Cannot reduce search view window, etc.

Thanks for the reply and shortcuts. Ctrl+F does work, but maybe a normal _ window minimize icon could be added. Hitting "n" works if you have gone to the Bible view window from a search result, not while still in the search window.

As re reducing the latter, i can do so in height, but not in width. I may try the latest beta if it is available. Thanks again in Jesus.

Searching support in Beta 3

I just remembered that Beta 3 has a funny bug which causes the search list to jump about to a different place on the list sometimes. This has been fixed, but Beta 4 has not yet been released. It might actually be better to wait for that.

Thanks. Could you tell me if

Thanks. Could you tell me if any of the other issues i had previously commented on (like inability to copy single words in Bible view, etc.) have been fixed?

Other issues

I don't think any of them have been done other than the formatted copy and the single word copy. The issues are on my tracker, but at the moment I just want to get 0.5 done and then push for a 0.5.1 release with useful bug fixes and enhancements.

I appreciate your heart and

I appreciate your heart and work to make a "Best Personal Bible"?

Meaning of the BPBible name

This is a question that has been asked a few times. The correct answer is that the name has no meaning at all, apart from the fact that it is unique and so easy to search for. Personally, I wouldn't have the presumption to call it something like "Best Personal Bible" because I know that there are many things that people want which are not supported, and it doesn't get enough development time spent on it (I do think it's the best for me at present, which is why I use it).

OK, how about "Berean's?

OK, how about "Berean's? Benevolent? Well, i tried.

But how about being able to right click on a TSK reference and copy it without having to load it into the Bible view? As if you do not have enough ideas.

BTW, here is a mystery. You know about the bug that prevents you from getting the r. clk "copy with links function" on a single word when you dbl click on it to select it, well, i found that if you drag the cursor over just the single word then you can get that copy function.

Have you submitted BPB to freeware sites like WebAttack (Snap files)?

General responses

I know there is other software called Berean Bible (most interesting names have already been thought of by someone or other). I'm afraid I don't care enough and don't really want to change a (semi)-established name.

There are probably a lot of places which could benefit from having better reference copy (scripture tooltips would be another). The trick would be to make them all have good default behaviour and then to stick with it.

Yes, selecting the text does work differently from double click, because a different mechanism is used and it's quirky. I thought Ben mentioned that in the original forum post. That's what you get when you rely on an old HTML renderer (and the one used in BPBible 0.4.7 and below is very old).

BPBible has not been submitted to any freeware sites (apart from PortableApps), due to the fact that:
a) We've been too lazy to do it.
b) My observation was that most freeware sites seemed to be adding us automatically (I get a daily Google email about new BPBible references on the web, and most of them come from some freeware aggregation site or other - many with older versions of the software). I've never heard of WebAttack. Is there anything special about it?

What I can say is that the majority of our traffic comes from PortableApps. Apparently we managed to fill an important niche there that others hadn't filled.

I hear you. Web Attack is

I hear you. Linux also is a large "gap" as there is not much for Bible software. I have gotten TheWord to install and run easily under WINE (though Linux and WINE need improvement in user friendliness) when experimenting with various flavors. And i think BPB did also, but i forget.

Web Attack is Snap Files, one of the most trust sources i think, but apparently they do not have a Bible software section. Telling.

I like TechSupport, which allows users to post their own reviews, which you might find interesting. After the next BPB version comes out i should add to it. (Edit: i just wrote one, but it is not verified yet)

BPBible on Linux

I know Linux is a large gap. I also know that BPBible has been run on Linux, both with Wine and natively. However, it has historically not been easy to set up the dependencies for running BPBible natively, and I don't think that is going to improve with BPBible 0.5 and XULRunner, unfortunately.

The main packages used on Linux are BibleTime and Xiphos, and I track the development of both to some extent. Both are also based on SWORD. They are reasonable pieces of software, but I prefer BPBible.

0.5 Beta 3

Hi, i am not sure if i should start a new thread on this, but i installed ver 0.5 Beta 3, and am just discovering new features, and am glad to see the copy formatted feature, but how do i get rid of the box that it places verses in? You cannot see it here, but pasting into a word pro (i use Open Office) as formatted shows the text in a box. And if i paste it into a table row then i can only delete the text, not the box, unless i undo my last paste action.

"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: " (1 John 2:1)

Removing copy formatted box

0.5 beta 4 was just released yesterday. However, it doesn't seem to have copy formatted working. I really don't understand why because I don't think I changed copy formatted in beta 4, and it works in my development version.

I mainly tested with pasting into Gmail, and that didn't have a box. However, I can see the box in OpenOffice and I'll try and see what can be done about it. In the meantime it is possible to select all of the text inside the box, cut it, and paste it outside of the box.

Well, thank God you can even

Well, thank God you can even do what you do, which i cannot, and may God give you grace and wisdom to improve it. BTW, you told me once, but how to i get BPB to recognize abbreviations like rm for Romans, etc, or to transfer that file to the new install? Thanks and may God bless.

Additional abbreviations

The file should be in the locales\locales.d\SWORD_1512 directory in your old BPBible installation, and be called bpbible.conf. It should be copied into the locales\locales.d directory in the new BPBible installation (that is, if it is one of the 0.5 betas). The whole discussion surrounding that was at http://www.bpbible.com/node/144.

You remind me that I intended to add the two abbreviations (Rm = Romans and Rv = Revelation) to the main BPBible conf file. I have just done so, and it will be in the next beta.

I am after speed, and have

I am after speed, and have stiff fingers, so ever little bit helps.

I found 4 bpbible.conf files with abbreviations, and 2 more showing the version, and with version 0.5 Beta 3 [Internal] version = 0.4.2 being in the C:\Program Files\CrossWire\BPBible\ folder. Thus the new should be in C:\Program Files\CrossWire\BPBible\locales\locales.d

But i just added (Rm = Romans and Rv = Revelation to all 4 bpbible.conf with abbreviations.

I noticed that some of your abbrv. have the abrrv. first and the the full name, while others have I rather than 1, and not all are in alphabetical order

So i tried to add 1Ths for Thessalonians but it does not work.
I tried things like
ITHESSALONIANS=IThess
ITHESSALONIANS=IThs
1Ths=2Thess
2Ths=2THESSALONIANS

At least with BPB you can add/change coding, whereas with E-sword and most others you cannot (for all i know), but which are still blessings.

Also i think i should mention

Also i think i should mention that in the 0.5 Beta 3 ver. the "copy selection with (or w/out) links" is missing, so you cannot copy selected text from the Bible view or Search, except by using the Copy verses function in the Bible view, which means you cannot copy portions of text or anything from the Search window itself.

Copy selection

Copy selection is still possible with keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl+C). However, it should probably be added to the menu as well. Copy without links is a bit harder. It may be able to be added, but I'm not sure yet so I haven't done anything with it.

Also, the lubricating hot die steel comment was spam, and has been deleted in accord with our standard policy.

You are right, thank God, and

You are right, thank God, and it works with my key remapping (CapsLock=Ctrl+C) that I had a problem with under 4.7. Saves time for me. Thanks

Note: If i Ctrl+C copy

Note: If i Ctrl+C copy passages that were from the Bible view, and past into a word pro doc as is, then the verse number is hyperlinked, such as to nbible://Matthew 21:9. Not so much of a problem for me, as i customized the OpenOffice keyboard shortcuts so that F2 pastes unformulated text, but then i lose the italics, and so the "copy verses" function with the formatted option is necessary.

And in the interest of a little speed, i think an option to place the address bar at the bottom of the window (closer to where my cursor normally is would be a little helpful.

Now if Windows would only recognize a Scripture reference and give a pop up in any app, or go to the verse if copied, then that would be useful. I really like the RefTagger script for use in html.

Thanks for your commitment to this work.

Verse number hyperlinks

The verse number hyperlinks are one of (possibly) many things that are used internally, but which we should be removing when we do copy formatted. Sounds like a little more work is needed...

I think moving the address bar anywhere other than the top would be somewhere between difficult and impossible, so I'm afraid I'm not even going to look into it.

I like RefTagger too.

They are removed when copy

They are removed when copy verses is used, versus just Crtrl+C. Sorry about the moving the address bar; a combination with the Search bar would be good, but i have NO idea of the work such requires. May God give you help.

I am making good use of the RefTagger with my thru the Bible commentary, thank God: http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/New_Testament_TOC.html

Combining location and search

Combining location and search is a request I've heard a few times. I'm not sure how hard it would be, but maybe it's something we should consider.

Next things you know we will

Next things you know we will be asking you to provide auto spell checking of search words! And free ice cream.

Re: nbible links

I didn't really address this, but I'm not sure that we are able to change what is copied with the Ctrl+C copy. This will mean that it will include all the formatting that we use internally. In the copy verses dialog we strip it out before showing the preview in the window, but I don't think we can do that on copy.

Also, I just fixed the problem with a box around the text that is copied with copy formatted.

Lost History toolbar.

I r. clicked on it (where it says Back) and hit zoom and when i deselected zoom then i lost the History toolbar as well, even though it is checked on r. clk and also under Windows. I also tried toggling it. I restarted it and typed in some verse look ups but still nothing.

It would be good to have a r. clk drop down list of previous verses, and also bookmarks.

May God bless

Re: Lost History toolbar

Sounds very odd. I'm not sure what to make of it. If it is still behaving like that, could you please send me a copy of the data.conf file to have a look at? Thanks again for valuable feedback.

Sorry for not responding

Sorry for not responding sooner, but where should i send the data.conf file (which Agent Ransack found)?

And i discovered another quirk just today. I tried to use the "copy verses" feature to copy Ps. 131, and all it will copy is
"A Song of degrees of David. Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me." (Psalms 131:1)

Coding is too high for me, but my investigation shows that beginning around Ps. 120 then when you try to select the first verse then the chapter and number (Ps. 123) is highlighted also and that then first verse is all that "copy verses" will copy, whereas before that they are not, and all that is selected is copied under "copy verses."

Hope this helps.

Copy verse selection

From the behaviour you describe, it sounds like it is unable to find what is selected, so it has fallen back to just copying the currently selected verse (in your case the first verse of the Psalm).

However, I don't seem to be able to reproduce this. I think I'm doing the same as you, and I can never get it to do anything but copy the whole of Psalm 131. As with so many other things, I'm then not sure what to do about it. I have put in a possible fix to handle selection slightly differently, but I'm not sure whether it addresses the problem or not.

Mine also has Are you using

Are you using 0.5 ver. 3? Mine also has the first verse highlighted by default, and part of the top sentence is obscured by the orange book and chapter number. If the chapter number becomes selected when you try to select many verses, beginning at the end and working to the beginning, the first sentence, "A Song of degrees of David" along with the chapter number to the left of it will become selected once your cursor goes past the first word (Lord) of the second sentence, which is a behavior that does not normally occur, and results in only the first verse being copied under "copy verses," and it also stops doing it after Ps. 145. Rebooting the PC does not fix it.

This new version is installed in "C:\Program Files\CrossWire\BPBible\bpbible.exe" But i have 0.4.7 installed in C:\Program Files\BPBible, and it does not do it.

Thank God for your hard work

Problem reproduced

I tried 0.5 beta 3, beta 4 and the latest development version (I always try to have every version ever released on my computer so I can check differences between different versions easily).

However, trying your instructions again with the data.conf file you sent me, I can reproduce it selecting either forwards or backwards. I don't know if the difference is in settings or if there was something I was doing wrong when testing, but I'll have to have a look into it and get back to you.

Thanks once again for that conf file. It's always worth getting a little insight into how people other than me use the software, and it has helped reproducing both of these problems.

Disappearing back/forward menu

Thanks for sending that configuration file to me. The problem was what I should probably have guessed, since we have actually run into it before: the menu is there, but is not on screen and so seems lost. It looks like showing the Zoom menu pushes the History toolbar to the right and off the screen. However, when the Zoom menu is hidden, the History toolbar does not seem to move back to the left again (not sure why) meaning that the menu appears to stay lost. If you resize the window until you see the edge of the history toolbar you can then drag it back next to the navigation toolbar again, but it seems to me it should preferably be something that just happens automatically. I don't like things where accidentally clicking the wrong button can get into a wrong state which is difficult to get out of.

You are right on the menu, it

You are right on the menu, it was way out in right field, and i never tried expanding the window, which enables dragging it back. But as for the copying quirk, did you mean to say you could not reproduce it?

Copying quirk fixed

I could reproduce it, and in fact fixed it just before. The problem was that the chapter number was before the first verse, so when it was selected there were no verse numbers before it and so it ignored the selection.

New bug found. When i try to

New bug found. When i try to use the "copy verses" option to copy any verse from Jude after verse 1, then it gives me an entire chapter from Revelation. If i select any word or the whole of Jude 3:1 (Beloved, when I gave all diligence..) - but not the verse number (3) - and choose "copy verses" then it copies all of Revelation 2. If i select the verse number to copy then it gives me Revelation cps 1-2.

Trying to copy Jude 1:4: then it gives me Revelation 3, but if i copy the verse number then it gives me Revelation 2-3. I did not do all them, but at the end (Jude 1:25) then i get Rev. 22 on both attempts.

This is the 05 Beta 3 version.

Continuous scrolling

One of the things I noticed with your configuration is that you don't use continuous scrolling. Is this intentional? For myself, I greatly prefer the new continuous scrolling because it prevents you missing things when the context flows over chapter boundaries, but would be interested to know if there are any problems with it.

Hmm, i remember replying this

Hmm, i remember replying this but do not see it. I said it was just a preference, as i use BPB more for search and copying than just reading, and i tend to scroll past where i am.

I also talked about the problem with copying Psalms 120-140 or so in a half-sized window.
